So who got kicked off American Idol on May 5, on the results show of Frank Sinatra Week? Surprisingly, it was not Casey James. Going in, if one were to rewind and take a look at
the performances, one might have a difficult time attempting to figure out who of the Top 5 -- Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Michael Lynche would end up with the least votes. But if one were to listen to the judges' critiques, it wouldn't have been difficult at all. Casey James was told he sounded like a lamb and that it was his worst performance ever. But in the end, Casey James wasn't even in the Bottom Two. It came down to Big Michael Lynche and little Aaron Kelly. Again, if one watched the performances, Michael Lynche's performance was superior, but in American Idol voters' minds, popularity trumps superiority in vocal stylings and overall performance (which explains how Tim Urban got past the first episode with the Top 24). So, who got kicked off American Idol on May 5? Aaron Kelly. Aaron Kelly performed Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon" Tuesday evening. It wasn't that he didn't do enough with the song, because the 17-year-old was superb, but it sometimes really does come down to popularity and the number of votes. All Top 5 American Idol contestants have tremendous voices and in the end, it simply came down to which competitor ended up with the least votes after the two-hour call-in period. Instead of going back and choosing a farewell song from his past performances, Aaron Kelly went with "Fly Me To The Moon," Harry Connick Jr., this week's mentor, accompanying him on the piano.
