May Day History

May Day is the International Workers Day and most working people around the world celebrate it every day, on May 1st.

Not everybody knows, though, how May 1st got to be Workers’Day. It all started on May 3, 1886, in Chicago, when a group of workers were protesting peacefully. They were all working for McCormick reaper plant and the purpose of their protest was to get an 8 hour per day work schedule.

Several of these workers were killed, so another protest was organized on the following day, and the police tried to stop it when it was close to its end. Someone threw an explosive, the police started shooting and the result was a tragic one – seven policemen and four workers killed.

A Chicago court handled the trial of the five leaders of the workers that got arrested. All five got death sentences, but the evidence that lead to this was very inconclusive, as it was later found out. One commited suicide in his cell and the other four were hanged.

In 1891, May Day was recognized, after a demonstration was organized in order to commemorate what happened in May 1886 in Chicago.

Oil Spill Gulf Of Mexico 2010

Well, after days of oil spill containment talks, it seems the situation is only going to get worse in the coasts of Louisiana. The oil spill has increased exponentially in size, and precious estimates of 1000 barrels a day were raised to 5000 barrels of petrol leaked each passing day. The oil spill Gulf of Mexico 2010 is surely going to be the worst environmental disaster in some years.

The blowout preventer, supposedly used as a safety measure is not working as it should, and authorities have been trying to find a way to make this situation not so disastrous.

The NASA released yesterday some images that show us the state of the oil spill.  Keep in mind that the oil spill continues increasing in size – and danger.

Along with the pictures, NASA commented:

“A damaged oil well may be leaking five times more oil into the Gulf of Mexico than officials first estimated. This view of the slick was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on Wednesday, April 28. The eastern part of the oily area is covered by streaks of clouds, but the reddish streaks shown in photos of the slick appear to be visible. It appears that a tendril of oil is reaching out toward the tip of the delta.”

Kentucky Derby 2010 Contenders

The Kentucky Derby 2010 contenders don't seem to be plentiful this year. Among the 2010 Kentucky Derby contenders, only two have odds below 10-1. Lookin for Lucky is the top favorite at 3-1, although he didn't get any
favors with the No. 1 post position. The closest competitor is Sidney's Candy at 5-1, although he also got an unflattering position at No. 20. Everyone else in between them is a sleeper pick, which seems to suggest that there aren't a lot of high profile horses in the bunch. But this also means there are few overwhelming Kentucky Derby 2010 contenders, which gives almost anyone a shot.

The only consensus so far is that Lookin for Lucky and Sidney's Candy are the two favorites. However, the favorites in this race are often the first to fall apart, as they don't have the best track record. Although no one's confident enough to lower the odds of the other horses, they may be the ones to bet on in the end.

Finding the best Kentucky Derby 2010 contenders other than the two favorites is the hard part. At this point, the biggest challenger may be one that wasn't even entered in the race until days ago. Filly Devil May Care had to step in when favorite Eskendereya was scratched by trainer Todd Pletcher. Eskendereya looked to be Pletcher's best chance for his first Derby win, and now the hopes are pinned on Devil May Care.

This late entry in the Kentucky Derby 2010 contenders may not be the next Rachel Alexandra. But after winning her last race at Gulfstream Park, she is one of a select few with 10-1 odds behind the favorites. With her sudden entry, and with Pletcher's lengthy drought in Churchill Downs, Devil May Care will garner the most attention other than Lookin at Lucky and Sidney's Candy.

The other Kentucky Derby 2010 contenders with 10-1 odds are Florida winner Ice Box, and turf expert Awesome Act. At 12-1, Noble's Promise has had showdowns with Lookin for Lucky before, but lost each time. Derby winner Calvin Borel helms Pletcher's next best shot at a win, as he rides Super Saver at 15-1.

Arbor Day

The last Friday of April is Arbor Day, and that day is today. Most people know that Arbor Day celebrates the beauty and importance of trees in the environment, but few know when and how it started.

A journalist named J. Sterling Morton, an early pioneer in the Nebraska Territory, encouraged tree planting by individuals and organizations in the barren farmland of the plains during the 1850s. At that time, new trees were greatly needed in plains farming by serving as windbreaks, and to provide fuel in the winter months. With the interest of his tree-planting campaigns, Morton proposed a state-wide tree planting holiday for April 1872. There were contests and prizes for the greatest number of trees planted on that first Arbor Day. Estimates state that over 1 million trees were planted as a result. The tradition continued, spreading to other states through the 1870s, and to schools nationwide, which led to the national Arbor Day that exists today.

Tree-planting is not the only way to celebrate Morton's cause - but certainly the best one. Here are a few resources to make your celebration happen:

The Arbor Day Foundation has a list of ways to celebrate on their website.

Locally, LA DWP is has Free Residential Shade Tree Program for customers, as well as a Free Non-Residential Shade Tree Program for businesses. All customers need to do is complete a online workshop.

Million Trees LA has advice on How to Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place, and asks that participants log trees planted so they can track how many trees have been added in the area.

Of course, if you want to keep it simple, there's nothing wrong with celebrating by sitting under a nice shade tree on a sunny southern California afternoon. Happy Arbor Day everyone.

Gerry Ryan

Veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne has described Gerry Ryan as an “unconstrained spirit” who lived life to the full.

Byrne said the news of his former colleague's sudden death was a “terribly frightening thing” for everybody.

He described Ryan as a “terrific friend, a terrific drinker and a terrific guy to be with”. He was also someone who was highly intelligent and well-read.

He said he was a great broadcaster who was not afraid to take on issues. “He was tremendously arrogant in his views and opinions and he was very funny about it at the same time. You couldn’t possibly take offence,” Byrne said.

“He lived live to the full, he was full of fun and hilarity and pure bloody devilment and that is how I will remember him.”

He was generous in spirit and a “terrific daddy to his kids”, Byrne added.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Drivetime , long-time colleague Larry Gogan described Ryan as “the rock of 2fm”.

British broadcaster Chris Evans, who credited Ryan with saving his radio career, described him as “absolutely one of the best broadcasters in the world. Fabulous, fabulous communicator. Very sad to hear he has left us. He really was the cream of our radio crop.”

Lady Gaga Amputated Leg

The American recording pop artist, Lady Gaga, surprised her fans and the TV audience after she announced that she had one of her legs amputated below the knee solely for fashion purposes.
The pop singer withstands the operation in order to look increasingly different, and because of this she seems to achieve her objectives. Her record company even paid for the said operation. In her new video, which will start its filming in three weeks, showcases her new image.
Lady Gaga said on MTV “This is the latest fashion I’m starting and you can see that I’m a world leader when it comes to wacky and weird shit huh. Next month after I recover from the surgery I hope to have the other leg amputated or maybe my arm, hmm…which one should I amputate next?”
Most pop music experts would say that Lady Gaga has pioneered a new trend in pop acts who want to cash in on the amputations.
Veteran pop act Madonna has already shown her interest in the new frenzy trend and has vowed to have both of her unsightly arms amputated and have it donated to science.

Fluffer

ACTOR TURNED California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a real man of action. What ever he does what ever he say attracts huge attention. In on such incident Governor attracted huge laugh when he said that he hated to work as “fluffer”.

When James Lipton, host of “Inside the Actor's Studio” asked Schwarzenegger what is least favorite jobs.

He simply replied “A fluffer”.

'Fluffer' is some one who works on a porno set and gets male actors ready for 'action' scenes.

The Gov. didn't stop there, he went on to say growing up his parents thought he was a little “wacky” when his mother walked into his room and saw “pictures on my walls of half naked men covered in oil.”

Emotionally driven words of Arnold made it tough for his media managers to do the face saving. His spokesperson said Gov. has never worked as a fluffer but he was just imagining the worst job possible.

Halo Reach Beta Code

Halo Reach is the latest part of the Halo series of first person shooter games. Halo has been one of the top favorite first person shooter (FPS) games of the world. The game is primarily made by Microsoft specifically for its XBOX platform. The XBOX 360 is the last XBOX console which is perfectly compatible with the new Halo Reach. Apart from the XBOX 360 Halo Reach has been released for other consoles and platforms as well, like the PS3, PSP and PC.
The official release of Halo Reach is due fall 2010, but the demo and beta versions are out. Basically the unlicensed version of Halo Reach is available which players could activate using a beta code which is now available on the internet for download. It’s a great way to experience the game play if not the whole game.
The Halo Reach experience is more or less like the previous Halo parts, of course with a lot of new features added. The thing with the Halo series is that despite the improvements in graphics and a host of new features the feel of the game doesn’t change, you still feel you’re playing Halo. This is unlike a lot of other games whose next parts make them completely different games. Example of such games is Alien Vs Predator in which there are extreme amounts of differences between part 2 and 1 and part 3 and 2. They feel completely different games. Microsoft has been creative enough to keep the tradition, yet incorporate advancement.

Gwen Araujo

Gwen Araujo is known to many by means of the Lifetime movie based on her life, “A Girl Like Me.” Gwen for those unfamiliar with her was a beautiful young woman with a loving mother, older sister, and younger brother. She was also brutally murdered in her teens and dumped like refuse by her killers.

On February 24, 1985, Gwen was born Edward. Gwen was a transgender youth growing up the same as any other child aside from the fact that she was dealing with Gender Identity Dysphoria (GID) which is a condition in which a persons mental perception of their gender does not match the physical anatomy they born with. It is hardly an easy life, and it took her family time to grow to accept Edward as Gwen. No matter how much love there is, it is not an easy thing to come grips with.

They did however learn to accept Gwen and supported her in her transition to living a full female life. Part of a full life male or female is having friends, and Gwen did have several. On the night of October 2, 2002 she met with several of those friends, one of whom had told the others she suspected that Gwen was actually a male.

This was disturbing to the boys she shared her suspicions with - Gwen had after all engaged in limited sexual activity with a pair of them. So disturbing was this in fact that they had had their female friend who was full of information call Gwen and invite her over under the guise that her former boyfriend would be present and wanted to see her.  As expected, Gwen dod go, but when she got there she entered a scene far different than would be expected.

She was forced into the bathroom where one boy ripped her pants off to manually inspect her genitals. She was then pushed from the room where the remainder of the boys - all 4 of them - beat her with fists, feet, a soup can, and apparently any object that was handy. They then strangled her and continued to punch her in the face. Once she was dead they put her in a car, drove her out to a location in the Sierra Nevada mountains, partially buried her, and then they went out for pancakes. After breakfast two of the boys returned to the scene of the crime to clean up.

When the case went to trial the boys attorneys argued the “trans-panic defense.” They claimed that their actions were a product of the heat of the moment. Their attorney argued for understanding, that the boys were duped and angry and under normal circumstances would never turn to violence. The prosecution shot one hole after another into the defense arguments and secured a pair of murder convictions for Jose  Merel and Michael Magdison - but not a hate crime which would have carried an even stiffer penalty. The other accomplices Jason Cazares and Jaron Nabors pled guilty to manslaughter with no argument and were sentenced to 6 and 11 years respectively.

There was no explaining why the hate crimes charge didn't stick. It was a premeditated plan in which the final result was fueled by hate. Observers could hardly believe it, it even seemed as if the judge could believe it. Still, at that time, crimes against the LGBT community were rarely prosecuted, and when they were it was almost never to the full extent of the law.

The Gwen Araujo trial became a landmark case in many regards. Prior to this trial the trans-panic defense had been successfully argued much like the Twinkie defense. It was believed that if a transgender person was murdered they brought it upon them self. They were asking for it. Since then not only has that defense become obsolete, hate crimes are far easier charges to make stick in such cases due to the blatantly blind eye turned to that option in this case.

Gwen is gone and there is nothing left of her but a family in pain and memories. Her mother Sylvia Guerrero has become a fierce and outspoken activist fir the transgender community speaking at countless engagements each year to raise awareness so that no one has to lose a son, daughter, friend, loved one due to being different in ways they cannot control. So that no other person has to die with their finals words being a pleading “But I have a family….”

Grantt Hill

PORTLAND, Ore. - The last game that didn't count for the Suns has wound up counting a lot.

When the Suns closed the preseason in October with Portland outrebounding them 50-28, it was the final bell on an alarming rebounding issue. The Suns were going to have to crash the glass by committee. Suns starting wings Grant Hill and Jason Richardson took heed and one or the other posted a double-digit rebounding game in six of Phoenix's first 11 games.

Now that it counts most, the Suns swingmen had been the team's leading rebounders entering Game 6, with Hill averaging 7.6 rebounds per game in the series and Richardson at 6.8 per game.

"The one thing the two of us have done this season is rebound pretty well from the perimeter," Hill said. "The big guys are keeping their guys off the boards. We just go in there and get them. Portland is known for being long and attacking the offensive glass. It's been something we talked about as a team. We've got to get to the boards before we can get out and run."

Phoenix entered Thursday as the NBA playoff leader in second-chance points (17.2 per game).

"Those guys are really long so Channing (Frye), Jarron (Collins) and Amar'e (Stoudemire) are doing a great job of keeping them off the glass and the guards have to come back to get the rebound. Those guys have got their hands full. We're just trying to help them out," Richardson said.

Two of the men are killed, and Kennedy decides the only chance he and the other survivors have is to swim to a nearby island. One of the men is too badly burned to swim, and Kennedy tows him through the water. All efforts to make their location known fail until Kennedy writes a message on a coconut, which friendly natives take to nearby Rendova. They return with a canoe, hide Kennedy under palm fronds, and deliver him to an Australian coastwatcher. After directing the rescue of his men, Kennedy learns he is eligible for transfer home; instead, he elects to assume command of another PT boat.

The FDA Has Approved Provenge

Provenge has finally received the long awaited approval from the FDA!!! We all celebrate and look forward to benefiting from its potential to extend our life.

Provenge is the first immunologic therapy ever approved in the United States to treat cancer. (In Russia, Antigenics has received approval for an immunological treatment for kidney cancer).

The FDA’s approval of Provenge is very narrow, just for men who have castrate resistant metastatic, asymptomatic prostate cancer. This means that you must have prostate cancer tumors outside of the gland and you are no longer responding to hormone therapy.

Despite this limited approval, I believe that the first year’s demand for the treatment will out strip the ability of Dendreon (the bio-tech company that developed Provenge) to accommodate all the men who wish to get the treatment. Although there will be doctors attempting to write “off label” prescriptions for the treatment, I do not expect that many men, if any, will be successful in obtaining the treatment if they are outside the very strict approval parameters.

Dendreon has been aware of the potential initial supply problems they will face in meeting the very early demand. The company is very sensitive to this issue and has taken the lead in trying to find ways to mitigate the problem. Despite the fact that they had not received FDA approval, they are well into a large building program that includes expanding their physical plant in three separate locations in the United States as well as hiring and training a large cadre of workers to so they will be able to hit the ground running. I applaud Dendreon for their willingness to “stick their necks out,” even before the FDA approval.

Hopefully, within the first year, they will be able to catch up to the demand along with continuing additional trials to demonstrate that Provenge in earlier disease can also offer survival extension.

Initially, Provenge’s availability will be limited solely to the United States. The FDA approval will not effect approval in any other country. Provenge is custom made for each man by a process that modifies a man’s own personal blood product. The modification process and reintroduction of the processed blood must be completed in a matter of a few days, so Dendreon has set up a network of 50 infusions sites (this number will be expanded in the future) throughout the United States so any man in the States will be able to access the treatment.

Jeanie Buss

The NBA's free-agent class of 2010 has drawn tremendous interest over the past two years, but people may have been overlooking Phil Jackson.

According his longtime girlfriend and Lakers executive vice president of business operations Jeanie Buss, the owner of 10 NBA titles could be on the hunt for a new job come the summer.

"I know Phil will be coaching next year, somewhere. Whether it's here or someplace else I don't know," Buss told ESPN.com. "There's going to be a lot of good jobs that come up this summer. ... I know that he can't just retire."

While Jackson said earlier this year that a Lakers championship would almost guarantee his return, there's still an issue of money.

"My dad, [Lakers owner Jerry Buss], has made it very clear he doesn't want to pay [Jackson] what he's been paying him. So that's kind of hard, too," Buss said in reference to Jackson's $12 million contract. "You could kind of say, in some jobs, well, I'm cutting back your hours. But can you see him cutting back his hours? It's not really about the amount of money for [Jackson]. It's about, 'I can't give you less effort.'"

Money's certainly a factor, but how's this for an angle: Jackson coached Michael Jordan to six titles, Kobe Bryant to four and Shaquille O'Neal to three. He's coached LeBron James to zero. Could Jackson be looking to write the final chapter of his coaching legacy with King James at his side? Probably not, but the summer of 2010 just got that much more interesting

Dendreon Rises After Winning Approval for Cancer Drug (Update2)

April 29 (Bloomberg) -- Dendreon Corp. won approval for its first product, a vaccine to fight prostate cancer, after a three-year battle with U.S. regulators. Shares surged the most in a year in New York trading.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared sales of the medicine, called Provenge, Shelly Burgess, a spokeswoman for the agency, said today in a telephone interview. Dendreon, of Seattle, submitted its application with the FDA in November 2006 and, after winning the backing of an advisory panel in 2007, was required to conduct another study to prove the drug worked.

Provenge will be the first medicine to train the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells like a virus. More than 27,000 men die of prostate cancer each year in the U.S., according to American Cancer Society. Provenge may bring in $4.3 billion in annual sales by 2020, according George Farmer, an analyst with Canaccord Adams Inc. in New York.

“Demand will be very high given the simplicity and convenience of administration combined with the extremely benign safety profile,” Farmer said in a research report today.

Dendreon gained $12.87, or 32 percent, to $52.49 as of 3:33 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. Before today, the shares had gained 51 percent so far this year as investors looked ahead to the FDA decision, scheduled for May 1.

Stock Volatility

The historic volatility of the stock attracts traders and short sellers who seek short-term profits. Hedge funds own 27 percent of Dendreon shares, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Provenge helped men whose prostate cancer had spread to other organs live four months longer in the 512-patient study released by the company in April 2009. The company had initially applied for approval based on an earlier study of 127 men that showed the drug improved survival and a second study of 98 men that failed to show a statistically significant benefit.

The therapy involves extracting white blood cells from a patient, mixing them with vaccine components and injecting the combination back into the person. It is designed to be given earlier in treatment of the cancer and pose fewer side effects than chemotherapy.

The FDA’s refusal to approve the drug in May 2007 based on the original data -- even after the agency’s outside advisers voted 13-4 that it was “substantially effective” -- sparked protests by patients and threats of a congressional probe.

Sales Plans

Dendreon Chief Executive Officer Mitchell Gold said Feb. 9 that the company will have three plants to make Provenge by mid- 2011 and 125 sales representatives. Production will be at full capacity within one year of approval, he said.

Questions about manufacturing logistics and Dendreon’s ability to meet demand for Provenge have resulted in varying estimates for potential sales of the product. The drug will generate $1.2 billion by 2014, according to the average estimate of four estimates surveyed by Bloomberg.

That year, Farmer projected Provenge would cost about $94,000 for each patient treated with a full course of the medicine. Provenge can generate $3.1 billion in 2014, he said.

At least a dozen additional products that harness the immune system to battle tumors are in late-stage development and Provenge approval “would be an important validation to the field,” said Janice Reichert, a senior research fellow at the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development in Boston.

“Provenge will certainly be a pioneer in that area,” Reichert said in an April 21 phone interview. “The experience will definitely inform the clinical development programs of other companies and other products.”

The most advanced of these vaccines include Stimuvax from Merck KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany, and Oncothyreon Inc. in Seattle; ipilimumab from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. in New York; and TroVax from Oxford BioMedica Plc in Oxford, United Kingdom.
