May 25 (Bloomberg) -- Trinidad and Tobago’s opposition leader General Kamla Persad-Bissessar  will become the Caribbean nation’s first woman prime minister after her coalition won national elections yesterday, the Trinidad Express reported.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning conceded defeat after preliminary results showed his People’s National Movement losing 14 of its 26 seats in Parliament, the Port of Spain-based newspaper said today on its website.

Former Attorney General Persad-Bissessar’s People’s Partnership coalition won 29 seats with her United National Congress party taking 21 seats, giving the UNC a simple majority in the 41-seat Parliament.
