Towel Day

May 25th is Towel Day, in memory of Douglas Adams, author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."  The book has several notable tips that you should take to heart when going on a walking vacation.  The first being to always carry  a towel. "A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."  "...any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with." On Towel Day, we are all encouraged to carry a towel.

The second thing is the usefulness of a good guidebook, such as the Hitchhiker's Guide. It used to be that you had to carry a printed book, but nowadays do you have favorite web sites or apps that you access via cell phone instead?  I am in love with my iPhone for its Maps feature, which I used to successfully navigate through unexplored parts of my local area on new walking routes.

But the best advice Douglas Adams ever wrote was DON'T PANIC, which was emblazoned on the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide.  Whenever you are out walking in unfamiliar territory, know where your towel is, don't panic, and use your guide to get you through.
