Tony Romo

There seems to be plenty of people out there believing Tony Romo plays too much golf in the off-season.

For you, we offer Romo's words after he earned his way into the next stage of qualifying for the HP Byron Nelson Championship on Tuesday with a 72 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club's Hills Course because the next qualifier coincides with the first organized team activity of the off-season.

"If a tee time doesn't work out, you just can't play," Romo said. "At the end of the day football is what I do. Golf is enjoyable. It's fun to compete and try to be good at it, but it's more fun to compete and get better at football. I think everyone knows that."

Romo has asked for a later tee time next Monday and Mark Harrison, the director of operations for the Northern Texas PGA told our Bill Nichols the group will do its best to accommodate Romo.

By the way, the Nelson runs May 20-23, so Romo would not be in position to miss any OTAs should he make the PGA Tour event. And if Romo doesn't make the field, he will be at the Honors Golf Club for local U.S. Open qualifying. The open will be played in June at Pebble Beach.

What would qualifying for the Nelson mean to Romo?

"I think it would be self-rewarding or whatever you want to call it just in the fact that you're able to go out and compete with some players who do this at a high level," Romo said. "And for a short period of time you're able to play with them."
