The St. George Marathon is capped at 7,400 but usually gets more than 10,000 applicants.
Why is the race so popular? It's fast. In 2009, more than 1,200 runners earned a Boston Qualifier at the St. George Marathon, the third most qualifiers for any other race except the Boston Marathon itself, and the California International Marathon in Sacramento.
The course descends 2,600 feet from start to finish. There are a few rolling hills in the first half of the race, but the last six miles are entirely downhill.
The St. George Marathon was also named the "most organized" marathon in the country in the January 2010 issue of Runner's World.
In 2009, Julie Thomas of Salt Lake City, Utah won for the women in 2:48:29. Iain Hunter of Provo, Utah won the men's division in 2:21:03.
