In a Syracuse, N.Y, courtroom yesterday, a judge sentenced a woman to 50-years in prison for poisoning her husband then attempting to frame her daughter for the murder.
“I have never seen a parent willing to sacrifice their child to shift the blame away from themselves,” Judge Joseph Fahey said, as he sentenced Stacey Castor, 41, to the maximum of 25 years to life for the murder of David Castor at their home in Syracuse in August 2005.
Since it was also concluded that Castor, attempted to kill her then-20 year old daughter with an overdose of drugs and vodka in September 2007, the judge tacked on another 25 years to her sentence, in addition to 1 1/3 to four years in prison for forging her husband’s will.
Initially, David Castor’s death was considered a suicide, but after investigators exhumed the body of her first husband, Michael Wallace, they determined that David did not knowingly drink ethylene glycol, a toxic chemical found in antifreeze.
Wallace’s death was originally ruled as a heart attack, but after the exhumation, authorities ruled it as a homicide. Castor was not charged with his death, but prosecutors used evidence from his death to nail her for David’s murder.
During her sentencing, Judge Fahey expressed harsh words to Castor, saying, “In my 34 years in the criminal justice system as a lawyer and a judge, I have seen serial killers, contract killers, killers of every variety and stripe. But, I have to say Mrs. Castro; you are in a class all by yourself.”
Prosecutors in the case said that Castor tried to kill her daughter in order to frame her for both deaths.
