Save The Planet Protest

Police shot and killed James J. Lee, a “radical environmentalist” who has been opposed to the Discovery Channel for years.

James Lee believed the Discovery Channel produced pseudo-environmental programs that caused the earth more harm than good.

James Lee published a disturbing manifesto on the www.savetheplanetprotest.com website. In Lee’s vision, Save the Planet means decreasing the human population and saving animals. Lee broadcasted that “the planet does not need humans. Savetheplanetprotest.com is a direct protest aimed specifically at the Discovery Channel.

Lee had been arrested before in a protest at the Discovery building in 2008 . He was charged with disorderly conduct. He threw money outside of the building and was told not to come within 500 feet of the building.

Lee represented himself in court, and according the Washington Post, Lee said he was evaluated by psychiatrists who "couldn’t find anything” wrong with him. The Discovery Channel was aware of Lee and his opposition to the channel via save the planet protests, but they did not “take his threats seriously.”

At 1 p.m. passengers on a bus in Maryland near the Discovery Channel building heard gunshots. Lee had walked in the building waving a handing gun. Lee also had a vest made of metallic canisters. Police were afraid the box he had may have had explosives. He took 3 hostages.

After four hours of talking to Lee, who “expressed a wide range of emotions,” policed fired. One of the canisters popped when Lee was shot, or one of them may have reacted or exploded when Lee was fired upon
