Dr. David Lyle Evans:A somewhat obscure figure in country & western, David Evans played bass in the Texas Troubadours in the mid-’70s. For anyone who doesn’t listen to country, that was the backup group for Ernest Tubb. Performers of Tubb’s stature often put a key bandmember in the position of bandleader in order to avoid headaches of both the musical and personal variety; Evans appears to have filled this role for Tubb while also providing the trademark bumpety-bump bass lines that put the honky in honky-tonk.
