California Lottery:Here’s another genius public relations move from the San Francisco 49ers: tomorrow, Aug. 25, they are holding a joint press conference with the California Lottery at 11:30 at their team headquarters in Santa Clara to help the state lottery celebrate its 25th anniversary.
According to the press announcement “tomorrow’s event with the 49ers officially launches San Francisco 49ers Scratchers tickets, a brand-new ticket for the Lottery. Fans that purchase these Scratchers tickets can enter their non-winning tickets on the Lottery’s Replay website for a chance to win unique and exclusive second-chance 49ers prizes, such as suites to games, autographed helmets and jerseys from current players, and VIP ticket packages.”
For those with short memories, the only reason Eddie DeBartolo Jr. isn’t running the 49ers anymore is that he plead guilty in 1998 in federal court to a felony charge of failing to report that Louisiana’s former governor allegedly extorted $400,000 from him to win a casino license in that state.
Now that his ne’er-do-well nephew Jed York is running the team it seems fitting that he honor his Uncle Eddie by endorsing the California Lottery. What’s next? Perhaps Jed will finance the Santa Clara football stadium by arranging for a Native American casino to be attached to the new facility–if he ever gets it built.
Actually, the biggest gamble this year will be for 49ers fans. Anyone wagering their money that the York family can make the NFL playoffs would be better off investing with Bernard Madoff.
