KSAT

A San Antonio family faces an $8,000 energy bill because of under-billing dating back to 2005, San Antonio TV station KSAT reported.

Shaking her head, Diamond Rubio said there's "no way" she can pay the bill.

A letter from CPS Energy said that since November 2005, she has been under-billed and now she has to pay up.

At the bottom of the letter, the company wrote "please accept our sincere apology for this error."

Rubio's daughter believes the family should not have to pay.

"They were paying what they thought was accurate and correct, so I just don't think they should be held responsible for that," Sandra Rubio said.

"I can't even sleep at night," Sandra Rubio said. "I don't know what I'm going to do."

CPS Energy said a clerical error caused the under-billing, but that the money must be repaid.

"When we find mistakes like that, we have to correct them," said Sandra Currans, customer contact manager for CPS Energy. "Unfortunately, we can't provide free utilities."

She said customers should easily notice under-billing because bills will show zero electric consumption.

"If they've turned on a light or two and there's zero charge, that's a good indicator for them to give us a call," Currans said.
