Ernie Harwell

Minnesota 4, Detroit 3: Hours after learning beloved Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell had died, Detroit lost to the Twins on J.J. Hardy's stellar ninth inning. Hardy saved a run with a brilliant defensive play at shortstop in the top of the ninth, then tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half. The Twins announced the news about Harwell, 92, to the Target Field crowd during the seventh-inning stretch, and Minnesota fans saluted him with a warm standing ovation.
Boston 5, Los Angeles 1: Jeremy Hermida hit a bases-clearing double to break an eighth-inning tie, and Jon Lester pitched eight innings of five-hit ball to lead the Red Sox. The Angels have started a 10-game road trip with five losses. One night after putting up 17 runs in the series opener, Boston was quiet until the eighth, when it scored four times.
New York 4, Baltimore 1: A.J. Burnett (4-0) outpitched promising rookie Brian Matusz (2-2) for the second time in a week, and Joba Chamberlain closed out the Orioles for the second night in a row. Mariano Rivera has stiffness in his left side.
Toronto 8, Cleveland 5: Jose Bautista homered for the second straight game, and the Blue Jays benefited from nine walks. Toronto has homered 14 times in winning five of the past six games. The Jays lead the league with 122 extra-base hits.
Kansas City 7, Chicago 2: Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer, recently recalled Mike Aviles had three hits, and Luke Hochevar pitched six sharp innings.
Notes: An MRI on Twins catcher Joe Mauer's injured left heel revealed no structural damage to his foot. ... The Royals placed outfielder Rick Ankiel on the DL with a strained quadriceps.
