A Boeing 737-800 airliner of Air India Express crashed on Saturday, the 21st of May 2010 near around 6:30 (local time) at the airport in Mangalore (Southern India). The news regarding the catastrophic event was announced by Anup Srivastav, the spokesman for the company. In addition he stated that only eight people survived the disaster.

The authorities at the Air India Express reported that the plane was carrying 160 passengers and six crew members.

The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Dubai to Mangalore. The aircraft crashed just before landing at Mangalore airport after a fire that broke out on the left wing which caused the plane to crash in the nearby forest. The cause of fire is yet to be determined by the authorities. After flying over the runway, the plane crashed about 10 km from the airport. All the commuters onboard the ill fated flight, were Indians by nationality. The Indian TV channels reported that the Boeing that crashed was piloted by a Russian pilot and the first officer was an Indian citizen.

The country’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the governing party known as the National Congress, presented their condolence to the relatives of victims. They added that the whole Indian state has been shocked by the devastating event that claimed lives of numerous innocent travelers.

Early responses to the crash of the airliner suggest that the fire broke out due to a break down in the engine. The incident could have been caused by the ignorance of the maintenance team working at the airways company.
