Blind Luck staged a furious rally from last place and won the Grade 1, $584,300 Kentucky Oaks by a head-bobbing nose over Evening Jewel on Friday at Louisville's Churchill Downs, giving trainer Jerry Hollendorfer his third victory in the race for 3-year-old fillies.
"The first time I saw the replay, I didn't really know if we won, but when I watched the second time, I thought we got it," Hollendorfer said. "We made a goal for the first half of the year to win the Oaks, and we were pretty tenacious going after that goal."
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Blind Luck ran 11/8 miles in 1:50.70 and paid $4.60 for her seventh win in 10 starts and her fourth Grade 1 victory. She earned $329,662 for the ownership partners Hollendorfer, Mark DeDomenico, John Carver and Peter Abruzzo to increase her career total to $1,398,712.
Hollendorfer previously won the Kentucky Oaks with Lite Light in 1991 and Pike Place Dancer in 1996.
In the Grade 2, $418,800 La Troienne Stakes for fillies and mares, 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra was upset for the second time in two 2010 starts as Unrivaled Belle ($20.80) edged her by a head after a stretch-long duel. Zardana, who beat Rachel Alexandra in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes, finished fifth in the La Troienne.
